He's been looking for someone to sponsor his Z32 six-speed conversion using a Richmond ROD transmission for a few months now. I read about that tranny a while back and it seems like it's very strong. If Brett actually goes through with the project (I hope he does), this would be our best option in terms of cost and transmission durability IMO. In regards to your theory, the synchros usually cause problems in higher mileage transmissions (this is not always the case, but it does apply to the majority of transmission failures). A lot of people would agree that the 97+ trannys are better/stronger than the older versions, yet we have still seen some of them fail. In reality, after going over a certain power level (800+ hp), the transmission itself becomes the problem. It simply cannot handle all that power, and parts start to break (this applies to the updated trannys as well). This is not my personal opinion, I got this information from one of the reputable vendors on this site. I choose not to disclose his identity because I'm not sure if he would want me to. The guy basically said that with 800+ hp and slicks, a single launch is enough to break the gears on a 97+ transmission. Bottom line, if you're shooting for really high hp and plan on running slicks, your best bet would be to find a different transmission. I personally wouldn't buy a 97+ tranny because I cannot justify spending $2k on a transmission which I have to worry about breaking. I would rather pay the extra money for something that has been proven to handle a lot of power. Until a strong, reasonably priced transmission is offered, I'll stick to the 3 spare transmissions sitting in my garage just in case $h!t happens.
